Dark markets, also known as underground or black markets, are online platforms where illegal goods and services are bought and sold. These markets operate on the dark web, a part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines and requires special software to access.
If an address does not meet all the conditions required by the clustering and identification heuristics, it will be tagged as “unnamed”. This means that some addresses belonging to a dark marketplace administrator or dark marketplace users are not included in our dataset (see more information on our dataset in Supplementary Information Section S1). Dark web marketplaces are websites that facilitate trade in illicit goods, mainly using Bitcoin. Since dark web marketplaces are unregulated, they do not offer any user protection, so police raids and scams regularly cause large losses to marketplace participants. However, the uncertainty has not prevented the proliferation of dark web marketplaces.

What can be found on dark markets?
Some even also allow you to contract with criminals, like hitmen or professional spies. Due to the illicit nature of items sold on these platforms and the law enforcement agencies that are constantly after them, dark web marketplaces are usually very difficult to access. Apart from the extra steps that you’ll have to take before accessing the dark web, some marketplaces require users to register first. Dark Web markets are the number one destination for cybercriminals who want to sell malware, ransomware-as-a-service, and databases of breached data. A lot of the breached data that can be purchased through Dark Web markets for cryptocurrency is very dangerous in the wrong hands.

On dark markets, users can find a wide range of illegal products and services, including:
- To ensure that vendors and customers play fair, the marketplaces have adopted many of the same strategies as legitimate businesses.
- These technology-driven changes, which mainly include the high use of cryptocurrencies and the use of secured browser technology such as The Onion Routing (TOR), have facilitated the widespread use of these markets for the trading of illegal goods.
- When he tried to cross a border, his laptop was searched and it was confirmed that he was OxyMonster, an online drug dealer.
- These white, synthetic stimulant powders that mimic cocaine and MDMA are highly prevalent in Russia, eastern Europe and the Balkans because they’re cheap and easy to manufacture locally.
- DWMs, where most of these transactions are made with Bitcoin, are said to be one of the mechanisms that keep the crypto market alive, according to some researchers.
- Drugs: Illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine are commonly sold on dark markets.

Why are dark markets dangerous?
Dark markets pose several risks to both buyers and sellers, including:
The Genesis Marketplace, available both on the dark web and the public internet provides an avenue for attackers to buy digital fingerprints. As shown in Figure 1, the site features a wiki, a news page, a rolling ticker of how many bots are available for sale, and a ticketing system. Corporate heavyweights, led by the financial sector, are paying vendors big bucks to illuminate what’s happening on hidden sections of the internet. For example, by paying a company like Recorded Future, which has raised $57.9 million in funding, a bank can receive an early alert that its payment card numbers have been breached, allowing the bank to react more quickly and avoid losses later.

Dark pools allow for trading execution away from the spotlight of public markets. Public markets tend to overreact or underreact due to news coverage and market sentiment. The pools facilitate trades that will trigger price overreaction or underreaction. Electronic trading’s become more prominent nowadays, and therefore, exchanges can be set up purely in a digital form. Such a move is giving way to an increased number of dark pool exchanges that allow investors to trade securities on a secondary market with lower fees since they are not run by institutional banks or organized public exchanges.
How can dark markets be combated?
Mixers, exchanges, and new markets
Law enforcement agencies around the world are working to shut down dark markets and arrest those involved in illegal activities. Additionally, individuals can protect themselves from the dangers of dark markets by avoiding these platforms altogether and reporting any illegal activity they encounter online.
In our study, we only selected marketplaces with more than 30 opioid listings. In this way, we gathered 5 active underground marketplaces with opioid listings. Note that some high-profile underground marketplaces and forums are frequently deactivated or have been shut down by law enforcement authorities [23].
While dark markets may offer anonymity and convenience for those seeking illicit goods and services, the risks far outweigh the benefits. It is important to be aware of the dangers posed by these platforms and to avoid engaging in illegal activities online.
